Abstract: The increasing interest in AI as a powerful aid in solving civil engineering problems has suggested the realization of a domain-independent tool for knowledge-based systems construction. The paper provides the description of a fuzzy inference engine, which has appropriately been developed in order to both build knowledge bases and to perform evaluations. Knowledge acquisition issues and approximate reasoning techniques are also illustrated and discussed.
