Abstract
The discussion deals with the historical masonry buildings located in seismic areas, characterized by a very high vulnerability. The article presents an overview of the investigations that help to define the geometric and dynamic model of such buildings, as well as two procedures to be used for their control and monitoring. Investigations such as ultrasonic, endoscopic or flat jacks measurements are currently a powerful tool both for the implementation of periodic verifications, both for the implementation of a rapid and reliable screening after a seismic event. In turn, two procedures for the structural control and monitoring are illustrated: one triggered by seismic events and one periodic. Both are based on the recordings of time histories of accelerations or velocities obtained inside the buildings. Appropriately acquired through a monitoring network of sensors and analysed in the frequency domain, these data may allow the recognition of any damaged areas and not only: they have great potential even if one wants to upgrade or enhance the dynamic model of the structure.
