Biography
Full Professor since 1999. He was Director of the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at the University of the Sannio in Benevento and Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, University of the Sannio. He is a member of the International Association of Engineering Geology and Environment (IAEG). He was President of the Italian Association of Applied and Environmental Geology, (Associazione Italiana di Geologia Applicata ed Ambientale, AIGA). He is on the Editorial Board of the international journal, “Bulletin of Engineering Geology and Environment”. He was a member of the National Committee for Forecasting and Preventing Great Risks (Commissione Nazionale Grandi Rischi) and a member of the Superior Council of Public Works of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. At the present he is a member of the as expert.
His scientific activity, as illustrated by 150 publications, has covered several sectors of Engineering Geology. Indeed, he has carried out research on the geological and technical characterization of typical soils and rocks in Southern Italy, basic studies for environmental and territorial analysis that necessitate a parameterization of the influence factors of a geological and technical type.
Studies on landslides and their triggering factors, such as hydrological or seismic conditions, as well as on the definition of the events’ probability, have been of particular interest in his research on the mass instability of Southern areas. These studies have been carried out via the geomorphological modelling of the main environmental factors, such as those hydrological, aimed at evaluating landslide hazard. He has undertaken specific studies on the triggering mechanism of debris flows and debris avalanches in Campania after the 1998 landslide event of Sarno, Siano, Quindici and Bracigliano. The geological and numerical modelling of the flows permitted the realization of susceptibility maps.
Prof. Guadagno has been and is the coordinator of numerous national research projects (MPI, CNR-GNDCI, PRIN) as well as those on an international scale (LAND-MAN, DEBRIS, TCLM, OIKOS, FRANE). Moreover, he was the Director of Master’s degree courses in “Geological and Environmental Risks in the Disaster management”.
