Biography
An academic geochemist with twenty years of experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes. Have supervised over 10 MSc Theses and is currently supervising 3 PhD students. The topics are focused on geochemical understanding with both generic and specialized content, balancing earth exploration/observation with environmental impacts. I have been committed to the academic pathway starting with postdoctoral experience in the UK, followed by volunteer teaching and curriculum development in Africa until appointment to the NKUA, Greece. My research interests are centered on environmental geochemistry and specifically the study of geochemical processes that control the behavior of trace elements in the surface Earth environment. I am generally interested in research topics relevant to contamination by potentially harmful trace elements and water resource management, impact assessment of mining activities, baseline geochemistry of soil and water, urban geochemistry and the use of geo-materials in environmental applications. My research also extends to the quantification of measurement uncertainty during sampling and analysis of geochemical media- a horizontal theme that applies in all research topics. My research has evolved to look at factors contributing to enhanced environmental mobility of trace elements by combining geochemical data with mineralogical data and spatial analysis techniques. Through funded projects from the EU, Greek Government and industry I have contributed to a number of studies of environmental impact and quality degradation – on both assessment and sustainable remediation.
