Abstract: The multiple scattering of visible radiation produced by dense media in the atmosphere has been studied using an imaging lidar. Observations of the spatial distribution of the signal intensity in the focal plane of a Newtonian telescope are carried out by means of an intensified CCD video-camera. Preliminary measurements of echoes from tropospheric clouds show that the contribution to the total signal due to the multiple scattering is evident, and increases with cloud depth.
