Biography
Career credentials Bruce Luyendyk has followed a four-decade career in Earth science and teaching. His specialties are marine geology, oceanography, California geology and Antarctica. He spent most of this career as a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) with an earlier phase at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). His career at UCSB included administrative leadership posts of department chair, founding director of the Institute for Crustal Studies (now Earth Research Institute), and Associate Dean of Science. Antarctic credentials In 1989 Luyendyk lead a small team of geologists to the remote regions of Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica. Their goal was to find evidence of the breakup of New Zealand from this part of Antarctica some hundred million years ago. Luyendyk then turned his efforts offshore and conducted marine surveys in the Ross Sea, Antarctica in 1996, 2003 and 2004. In between these he participated in two more expeditions in Marie Byrd Land in 1997 and 1998. His last visit to Antarctica was in 2010-11 as part of the ANDRILL Coulman High drilling project. Educational background Luyendyk’s formal education is in geophysics, a branch of geology, and in oceanography or marine geophysics, in which he received a Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in 1969. He followed this with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Woods Hole in Massachusetts (WHOI). The excitement of the science program at WHOI captured all his attention and kept him in Cape Cod for four years. Then he landed a professorship at UC Santa Barbara and returned to his beloved California. Credits and awards Bruce Luyendyk has received professional recognition by election as a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He shared the Newcomb Cleveland Prize of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for a report on the discovery of deep-sea black smokers with the deep submersible ALVIN. His Alma Matter San Diego State named him as a Distinguished Alumni based on his research in southern California. Over his career he has been listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the West, Who’s Who in Technology, and American Men and Women of Science. He was a contributor to the Encyclopedia Britannica authoring a section entitled The Ocean Basins. He has over one hundred fifty scientific publications. In March 2016 the U.S. Board on Geographic Names honored Bruce by naming a summit in Marie Byrd Land, (Fosdick Mountains in the Ford Ranges), Mount Luyendyk.
