Biography
Dr. Konstantinos Topouzelis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean and he is leading the Marine Remote Sensing Group (http://mrsg.aegean.gr/). He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies (University of the Aegean, Department of Environment), a Master’s degree in Remote Sensing (University of Dundee, Department of Applied Physics & Mechanical Engineering) and a PhD in marine pollution monitoring from space (National Technical University of Athens, School of Rural and Surveying Engineering). Also, he holds an Executive MBA (University of the Aegean, Department of Bussiness Administration). His main research interest is on the analysis of remote sensing datasets, including satellite and aerial images, for marine and coastal applications. His expertise includes automatic detection of oceanographic phenomena, Object Based Image Analysis, image processing algorithms and coastal mapping. He is an author of more than 50 refereed papers in international scientific journals, member of editorial board and referee in several scientific journals, principal investigator in international research projects. Prior to his academic career he worked for the European Commission Joint Research Centre, ISPRA, Italy and in Greek private sector. Participation in international scientific committees: - Member of the Task Force on "Remote Sensing of Marine Litter and Debris (RSMLD)”, International Ocean-Color Coordinating Commmittee (https://ioccg.org/) - Member of the Working Group on Marine Debris, GEO BluePlanet, Group on Earth Observations (GEO) - Member of the Pool of Experts, 2016-2020, A Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (Regular Process), Division for ocean affairs and the law of the sea, United Nations He lives in Lesvos island with his wife Elli and their two boys Nicolas and Dimitris. He is a qualified sailing skipper, but deep down he wishes he could have been a professional sailor.
