Biography
Dr. François Rossi studied Materials Science in Grenoble and got his PhD in 1984 from Université Claude Bernard in Lyon. After 2 years in industry in France and Germany (Fours BMI, Lyon), working on vacuum furnaces for metallurgy, he joined the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique, Direction des Applications Militaires (CEA-DAM) as R&D group leader in Nuclear Materials engineering (1981-1986). After a 2 years stay as invited scientist in Los Alamos National Laboratory USA in 1986-87, to work on Ion Implantation, Physical Vapor deposition and Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition, he moved back to CEA-DAM in 1987 and in 1989 to CEA in Grenoble “Direction des Technologies Avancées” as section leader, working on Surface Engineering for metallurgical applications. In 1991, he moved to the JRC, Institute for Advanced Materials (IAM) in Petten where he was the manager of the Advanced Coating Centre, a joint venture between IAM and the Dutch Research Centre for Energy. After his transfer to Ispra in 1996, he developed Plasma based processes and surface modifications for biological applications. Since 2002, he has been the head of the JRC NanoBiotechnology laboratory in the JRC Institute for Health and Consumer Protection, managing a group of 35 scientists and students working on Bio/non bio interfaces, nanobioscience and toxicology testing of nanomaterials. Since 2014, he is the Scientific Coordinator of the NanoBioScience Unit.
He is author and co-author of 230 peer reviewed articles, 12 book chapters, and 10 patents and has been involved in more than 20 RTD projects from FP3 to FP7.
