RESEARCHAuthor/co-author of over 400 papers, and Editor and contributor to three books published by Springer in 2012. Principal Investigator/Co-Investigator on over 30 NERC grant awards since 1982. Was Head of Facility of five national NERC facilities, four of which I founded. One of three leaders of the SAGES initiative to the Scottish Funding Council. Major field of study: the application of isotope geochemistry to the Earth and planetary sciences. Numerous invited/keynote/plenary lectures.PROFESSIONAL PROFILEMy research interests centre on the development and application of combined isotope techniques to the Earth and planetary sciences. I am especially interested in geosphere biosphere interactions, and the use of stable isotope methods to constrain fluxes between these and other components of the Earth system. I am involved in economic geology both hydrocarbon and mineral/metal sectors throughout the cycle of exploration, exploitation, remediation. My interests extend to persistent organic pollutants, and the role of stable and radioactive isotopes in allowing source apportionment of these (particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). A particular research focus is in using isotope stratigraphy to elucidate unusual times in Earth history, notably the early Proterozoic and the Neoproterozoic.. Latterly, I developed new interests in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry methods and their application to quantifying rates of geomorphological processes over the Quaternary.INVITED COURSES AND WORKSHOPSI have presented numerous short courses and workshops to academia, industry and government surveys. In addition to many in the UK, these have included invited courses in Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Russia and Spain. Most recently, in 2010 I was an invited guest participant on the French Government -sponsored 6-day workshop “Gemstones and Their Geology and Gemmology” in Nairobi, Kenya.EDITORIAL AND ADVISORY BOARD DUTIES 1989-1995 Sedimentary Geology; Editorial Board1990-1991 Advances in Inorganic Mass Spectrometry; Editorial Board1991-1995 Mineralium Deposita; Editorial Board1994-1998 Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Earth Sciences; Editorial Board2000- The Holocene; Editorial Advisory Board2001-2009 Journal of Quaternary Science; Editorial Executive Board2012-2013 Chair of the BGS Advisory Board.
