Biography
Born in Milano (Italy) on December 19th, 1965, he is Full Professor of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy (Area 4, SSD Geo/02) at the Architecture, Design and Planning Department of the University of Sassari. Education He graduated in Geological Sciences at Siena University on July 17th, 1990. From 1992 to 1996 he did his Ph.D. at the Earth Sciences Department of the University of Siena. PhD title on 8-7-1997. During the Ph.D. he went several times to Canada c/o the University of Guelph (Ontario), the Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia), and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (Nova Scotia) to learn new techniques and develop a background in the field of Marine Geology, in particular of seismic-stratigraphy. On 1997 he received the Killam Post-doctoral fellowship c/o the Dalhousie University of Halifax (Nova Scotia), where he spent 12 months from 15 July 1997 to 14 July 1998. On 1999-2000 he received a fellowship from the University of Siena, and from the 2000 to the 2002 he had a two year Assistant Researcher position c/o the Earth Sciences Department of the University of Siena. From September 2002 to July 2011 he was Associate Professor of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy c/o the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the University of Sassari and since 2009 at the Department of Botany, Ecology and Geology). From the 28th July 2011 to January 2014 he covered the position of Full Professor at the Nature and Land Resources Science of the University of Sassari and where he taught Marine Geology and Sedimentology for the degree “Laurea” in Land and Environment Management. MEMBERSHIP 1) International Association of Sedimentologist (IAS) (General Secretary). 2) Società Geologica Italiana. 3) Associazione Italiana di Geologia del Sedimentario-GeoSed 5) Killam Trusts 6) Associazione Speleologica SPELEOSIENA (President) Editorial He is associate editor of Terra Nova international Journal (Wiley-Blackwell) and part of the editorial board/reviewer of several international journals. He is peer reviewer of the European Science Foundation (ESF) and of the Italian Ministry of Instruction, University and Research (MIUR). Teaching He is currently teaching Sedimentology and Applied Marine Geology at the “Master degree” in Environment and land Management. He is the Coordinator of the PhD in Architecture and Environment of the University of Sassari. Researches Main research interests concern extensional basin analysis, clastic sedimentology and Quaternary climate changes. Basin analysis has been mainly performed from 1992 to 2002 and sequence and seismic stratigraphy where the main used tools. In those times, studies where mainly addressed to the understanding the palaeogeographical and structural evolution of sedimentary Neogene-Quaternary basins developed during and post the collisional phases of the Northern Apennines and of the Carboniferous-Permo-Triassic basins of the Canadian Appalachians. Quaternary climatic changes studies are nowadays his main goal. Several projects have been carried out on late Pleistocene-Holocene successions of the Mediterranean Sea. Recently these studies have been addressed to the evaluation of human impact on coastal evolution. In particular on how the humans can influence ecosystem changes at the century scale. All Quaternary studies are supported by Optical Stimulating Luminescence (OSL) age dating. A lab for OSL is running between the Universities of Sassari and Milano “Bicocca”. In the 2009 he had organized the 27th IAS Regional Meeting and he is now the General Secretary of the International Association of Sedimentologists. He is President of the Italian Association of Sedimentary Geology (GeoSed).
