Biography
Massimiliano Rinaldo Barchi. Born in Foligno (PG) 27/12/1958. Home Address: via del Lavoro, 42, 06124 Perugia (Italy). Work Address: Dipartimento di Fisica e Geologia, P.za Università, 1 – 06123 Perugia (Italy). Married (1986) with two daughters, Laura (1990) and Lucrezia (1994). Massimiliano R. Barchi, PhD (1989), is Full Professor of Geology at the Dipartimento di Fisica e Geologia of the University of Perugia, where he has been carrying out research in structural geology since 1983. From 1984 to 1988 he dealt with problems related to structural analysis and construction of balanced geological sections throughout the Umbria-Marche Apennines. Since 1988, after a study period at the Rice University (Houston, TX), his research focussed on the interpretation of seismic reflection profiles and on the integration of surface geology data and subsurface geological and geophysical data. This topic has been mainly developed within the CROP03 project (a crustal NVR profile through the Northern Apennines). He has also cumulated a large experience in geological field mapping, supervising both regional and national geological surveys. Since 1997 his research interest has been mainly focussed on the integrated study (surface geology and geomorphology, interpretation of seismic reflection profiles, fault mechanics) of the seismogenic faults. The same methods have been applied to the reconstruction of the subsurface geological setting of tectonically complex regions, aimed to both oil and geothermal exploration. Research areas: several regions in Italy (Po Plain, Northern Apennines, Southern Apennines, Sicily) and abroad (Northumberland Basin, U.K.; North Anatolian Fault, Turkey; Lamu Basin, Eastern Africa). He is Author of about 100 papers, mostly in international Journals. In 2016-2019 he was Head of the Dipartimento di Fisica e Geologia of the Perugia University.
