Seismic Waves and Sound Waves: From Earthquakes to Music

Abstract

In many seismically active regions a consciousness in seismic hazard still must be acquired at the same level as Japan, California and New Zealand. The consequences of scientific illiteracy in the field of earth science has dramatic consequences in terms of loss of lives. The aim of the project we describe is to increase preparedness to earthquake by linking the physical science and the humanistic culture in the form of music. The workshop built for this project provides a holistic view of waves that knits together seismic and sound waves. It ends up with a concert held by the young musicians of the Youth Orchestras in seismically active countries. We believe that science must be at the service of society and through the Youth Orchestras we will give to the young generations the skills to improve resilience to earthquakes in their own countries.
