dc.description.abstract | The Abruzzo earthquake on April 6 this year was surprising for several reasons. Although the historical record shows that the city of L’Aquila has suffered intensity IX or higher several times, this earthquake caused stronger shaking than any other in the area for the past 300 years. In addition, the mechanism displays clear extensional stresses in a region characterized by shortening during the Miocene and the mainshock was heralded by a foreshock swarm. | en |
