Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to review shortly some observational backgrounds for the suggestion of a genuine link between processes in the lower atmosphere and ionospheric response. Attention is concentrated on the waves which are thought to couple the lower atmosphere with the thermosphere/ionosphere system.
