| Abstract: | The fundamental goal of this chapter is to provide a summary of the seismotectonics of the Messina Strait with special reference to the 28th December 1908 earthquake, the bridge Design Earthquake. We summarize
what is known about the earthquake, describe the source model that has been used for assessing the bridge design seismic action (see Section 5.2. Seismic hazard and design earthquakes) and discuss some short- and long-
term implications of tectonic activity in the area. |
