Biography
Sebastiano Foti is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. He received PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino and has been a Visiting Research Scholar at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta (USA) and a Research Associate at the Centre for Offshore Foundation System at the University of Western Australia in Perth. He has been awarded the Geotechnical Research Medal (Bishop Medal) 2003 by the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) for the best paper on geotechnical engineering and the Honorable Mention in the category Best Paper in the Geophysics journal in 2011 by the Society of Exploration Geophysics (USA). He delivered Keynote Lectures at the II International Conference on Performed Based Design in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering in Taormina, May 2012 and at the international conference ISC-4 Geotechnical and Geophysical Site Characterization, Recife (Brasil), September 2012. He delivered a General Report for the session “Geophysical methods applied to geotechnical engineering” at the international conference ISC-2 Geotechnical and Geophysical Site Characterization, Porto (Portugal) and a Panel Report for the session “Siting” at MERCEA08 Seismic Engineering International Conference commemorating the 1908 Messina and Reggio Calabria Earthquake, Reggio Calabria, 8-11 July 2008. He has been a short term Visiting Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia (USA), Nagoya City University (Japan), University of California at Berkeley (USA) and delivered seminars at many prestigious international institutions. His research is mainly related to geophysical methods for geotechnical characterisation, with particular reference to surface wave testing, seismic waves in porous media and use of geophysical techniques in the lab. Other research interests comprise soil-structure interaction, bridge scouring assessment on the basis of structural dynamics and earth retaining systems in seismic zone. He has published over 150 papers in scientific journals and technical conferences, three books and six book chapters. He served on the board of the Italian Geotechnical Society. Currently he serves in Technical Commitee TC203: Earthquakes of ISSMGE (Intern. Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering), previously he was a a Core Member of the TC 102: Ground Property Characterization by In-Situ Tests. He serves in the Editorial Board of Soils and Foundations and as a referee for the main international journals in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering and Applied Geophysics.
